Nathan Haines has spent more than four decades shaping the sound of New Zealand jazz, recording internationally, mentoring the next generation, and building one of the most respected catalogues in the country. This May, he brings that world to Queens Rooftop.
Curated entirely by Haines to mark NZ Music Month, the residency runs across four Sunday afternoons in May â the first-time live music has ever been introduced to the space. The best part? Entry is completely free!
Each session features two live sets from artists Haines has played alongside, recorded with, and championed, plus his own DJ set drawn from a vinyl collection built over forty years. The result is something that feels less like an event series and more like a portrait of a musician's world, performed live above the WaitematÄ.
The programme:
3 MAY: Michal Martyniuk Trio Pianist, composer, long-time collaborator. A sound that sits at the intersection of classic jazz and contemporary production.
Motherâs Day, 10 MAY: Elisa (Rachel Clarke) Her voice runs through several Haines records â including Belo Dia. Hearing it live, in this setting, will be something truly special to take mum to.
17 MAY: Coco Charles Sold-out shows, a debut album produced by Vivek Gabriel on the way. One of the most compelling young voices in the city right now.
24 MAY: Joe Kaptein Trio Core member of Haines' live band. One half of electro-jazz project Soft Chaos, whose debut drops internationally later this year.
