Michael Hill International Violin Competition once again brings 16 of the world’s best ascending violinists and an international judging panel of some the most respected violinists and soloists from across the globe to Queenstown and Auckland.

Celebrating 25 years in 2026, the “Michael Hill” – as it is known across the world (and this year will a special one as we reflect on Sir Michael’s passion and legacy) – remains a favourite on the competition circuit, not just for its prestigious prize package, esteemed judging panel and career-launching opportunities, but also for the manaaki and aroha that greets every competitor the moment they touch down in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Following Queenstown’s quarter-finals, six competitors will be selected by the judges to compete in what is sometimes considered the most difficult round, the semi-finals (Round III) in Auckland – with NZTrio and violist Rob Ashworth – on 3 and 4 June in Auckland Town Hall.

The Competition’s Grand Final, in which each of the three finalists performs a concerto with the Auckland Philharmonia at Auckland’s Town Hall on 6 June, offers audiences drama, passion and breathtaking violin - a rare opportunity to witness the future stars of classical music the moment their careers are launched.
